Founded in the late 1940s by a group of fishermen and pearl divers, La Ventana has maintained it’s quiet, community-focused values ever since. Throughout the year, this rural town on the coast plays host to hundreds of enthusiasts who come to take part in a unique and exciting sport; kiteboarding.
Here at Casa Tara Resort, we’re fortunate to be clued into the kiteboarding scene here in Baja. Recently, kiteboarding in and around our luxury hotel was featured in the online magazine, 57 Hours. Author Rachael Cavanaugh was stoked to find a welcoming community that was more than happy to share their hobby with others. Take a look at what makes this area so ideal for this fun activity.
Unlike surfboarding or scuba diving which can be done nearly anywhere with a stretch of coast, kiteboarding requires specific conditions in order to best enjoy it. La Ventana is widely regarded as having world-class kiteboarding conditions. That’s largely due to its position.
Nestled between the mainland of the Baja Peninsula and Cerralvo Island, there’s a “wind gap” that moves consistent, strong winds across the bay. Thanks to these steady winds, long stretches of untouched beaches, and calm sea waters, there are few better places for kiteboarders of all skill levels to enjoy an afternoon of their favorite sport. The result is a spot where you can kiteboard for most of the year. Between November and March, the wind currents roll in daily from noon to 5:00 p.m. This means that you can spend the best parts of the day riding the wind currents.
With six miles of beaches to board along, running from El Sargento and La Ventana, there are plenty of places to play. The winds average about 15 to 25 MPH, but occasionally you’ll get a surge of wind that ramps up to 35 MPH. This makes for consistent breezes that are inviting for beginners and offer a lot of room for more experienced kiteboarders to try new tricks.
There’s no denying the addictive fun that comes along with kiteboarding, but when the winds start to die down, you’ll want to keep busy with other activities. La Ventana has plenty to do just off the beaches. Nearby you’ll find an incredible network of trails that are tailor-made for mountain biking expeditions and hiking treks. Nestled in the hills are thermal hot springs that are great for soaking in after a long day of exercise and adventure.
Wander into town and check out the thriving bar and restaurant scene. You’ll find locally owned outfits that serve some of the best food you’ve ever had. You’ll find cheap street fare alongside high-quality restaurant options, affordable drinks, and plenty of nightlife entertainment.
If ready to catch the winds and waves of La Ventana, you’ll need a comfortable place to stay.
